The classroom is all ready for your return and we are so excited to start the autumn term together.

Our Class Saint

During our transition sessions in July, Year 3 chose Mother Teresa to be their class Saint. They chose her because she was known for her charitable work, helped the poor and vulnerable and believed that she was sent on a mission to do God’s work and to help others.

She is the patron saint of World Youth Day and the Missionaries of Charity. Her Feast Day is September 5th.

Gospel Values

English

During the autumn term, Year 3 will be exploring the place value of grammar and punctuation. This unit will inform our writing for the rest of our year. After this, we will be exploring different genres of writing using themed books as our stimulus.

Maths

In Maths we will revise our understanding of place value in 2 digit numbers before moving on to 3 digit numbers. We will learn about greater than and less than and place numbers up to 1000 on a number line. Once our place value understanding is secure, we will learn how to add and subtract 3 digit numbers using the column method. We will also be learning our 3, 4 and 8 times tables.

Science

Our topic for Science is rocks and fossils. We’ll learn how rocks are formed, discover the different types of rocks, and find out what fossils can tell us about plants and animals from the past. We will later be focussing on another topic which is animals, including humans. We will be naming and sorting animals according to their diet, using the key words omnivore, herbivore and carnivore. We will learn about eating healthy foods, the 5 main food groups and a balanced diet. We will also learn about the human skeleton and how our muscles work.

History

In History, we will be learning about the changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. This will include a visit which will provide highly-engaging learning.

Geography

This autumn in geography, we will be learning about countries in Europe. We’ll explore maps to find out where different countries are, learn about their capitals and landmarks, and discover what makes each place special.

Art

This autumn in art, we will be experimenting with gestural drawing using charcoal. We’ll explore how to use quick, expressive lines to capture movement and shape, and practise different techniques to bring our drawings to life.

D & T

This autumn in DT, we will be designing and making a moving monster. We’ll learn how levers and linkages work, then use them to create fun, moving parts that bring our monster designs to life.

Music

In music we will begin to learn how to play the recorder. We will also learn how to read music, play the notes B and A and how to play pieces, in time, using these notes. We will focus on Native American music; exploring how the dimensions of music are used and know the indicators of this style.
