History

History is all around us

The primary curriculum for History aims to ensure that all pupils:

Here at St. Peter's, we follow our 5 key learning skills in each unit -

  • Chronology - To place events and some artefacts on a timeline.

Evidence and Interpretation - To observe or handle some evidence to ask questions about the past.

Cause and Consequence -To explain why and what the consequences of these actions were.

Change and Continuity -To describe changes and historical events.

Similarity and Difference - To compare the similarities and differences between different castles.

Historical Significance - To understand about key events of a significant and how it has influenced us today.

Each of these skills has clear progression throughout the school, to ensure we are building on prior knowledge so we can think and speak like a historian.

The love of History begins in Early Years, where the children begin to make sense of their own life-story and family’s history, they compare and contrast characters from stories, including figures from the past and talk about the lives of people around them and their roles in society.

At St. Peters’ we are all Historians. This is what our children have said,

  • I love History! When I am older, I want a job to do with History.
  • I love finding out about the past, it is where we came from.
  • We are very famous in Stoke on Trent, we made and still make pottery, there were and still are bottle kilns.
  • It is good to know what happened in the past, in the past they created things for us, Egyptians had an impact on our lives but still have mysteries, there were different beliefs to ours and we learn how they are different.
  • We can prevent things happening again and learn from the past, we can learn about the mistakes of the past.
  • History is really good for our mind to give us knowledge.
  • I like going back in the past.
  • I love learning about the past and using research to find knowledge.
