Our Class Saint – Saint Maximilian Kolbe
St. Maximilian Kolbe is the patron saint of journalism, the media and the family. St. Maximilian Kolbe was born on January 8, 1894, in Poland. He was a Polish Franciscan friar and a martyr in the German death Camp of Auschwitz during World War II. He is a martyr as he gave up his life the safe the life of another man in the concentration camp in Auschwitz.
Home Reading
Reading helps children with their knowledge, understanding and language. The children are taught to read in school; however it is important that you encourage your child to read at home daily for 20 minutes and listen to them read a couple of pages of their book every night.
Reading books will be changed regularly and every week the children will also choose a library book to read over the weekend.

Parents, you must sign your child’s reading diaries, so that your children can be rewarded with a stamp for their efforts.
Homework
Children will be given 1 piece of maths and 1 piece of grammar homework each week. Homework will be handed out every Tuesday (to be completed by the following Monday)
Children also have logins to Times Table Rockstars and Emile and are expected to practise their times-tables and spellings weekly.

What will we be learning this Term?
Autumn 1 (2025)
RE
This half term we will be studying two units in our RE lessons:
The Story of the People of God
- In this unit, the children will be given opportunities to develop their knowledge and understanding of the structure of the Bible and the forms of literature that are found in the different books.
- The children will be introduced to stories of significant people in the Old Testament.
- They will discover what some of these stories tell us about their relationship with God.
Followers of Christ
- We will consider the call of the disciples by Jesus.
- The children will learn about the demands that the call of Christ placed on these first disciples and they will think about ways in which people answer the call of Christ today through the life of the Church.
English and Reading
Reading for pleasure: Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll
We will read the story of Olive, an evacuee who is trying to discover what has happened to Suki. Suki disappeared during an air raid in London which has led to many unsolved mysteries. Will Suki, Olive and Cliff ever be reunited?
We will use our class book as inspiration for our own writing. We will learn key language and grammar skills to help us to write a variety of different texts.
Ongoing throughout this and each term will be a strong focus spelling, punctuation and handwriting. Please help your child to practise these skills at home.
Oliver Twist
We will use this text to explore key reading skills whilst also enjoying this well-loved story. We will focus our reading skills around the following:
- summarising ideas from more than one paragraph
- making inferences using evidence to support ideas
- predicting what might happen from details stated and implied
- exploring a range of poetry and non-fiction texts to further enhance our learning

This half term we will focus on:

Animals Including Humans
We will learn about the human circulatory system by studying the following:
- circulatory system
- blood
- heart
- pulse rate and what happens when we exercise
- the effect of drugs and alcohol
- the importance of a balanced diet
History
World War II
We will look at the impact WW2 has had on life today. Our history work this half term involves studying the second world war. We will look at the outbreak of this war, evacuation, rationing, the events at Dunkirk and the use of propaganda.
Art
2D Drawing to 3D Making
Explore how 2D drawings can be transformed to 3D objects. Work towards a sculptural outcome or a graphic design outcome.
Computing
We are Computational Thinkers
Children will develop their understanding of algorithms. They will learn to:
- develop the ability to reason logically about algorithms
- understand how key algorithms can be expressed as programs
- understand that some algorithms are more efficient than others
- understand common algorithms for searching and sorting a list
French
French Sport and the Olympics
- Pronounce the name of a sport accurately and confidently.
- Use the verbs jouer and faire correctly with different sports.
- Create sentences using two verbs, the seconds one in the infinitive form.
- Construct simple sentences to say whether or not they play a sport.
- Express and justify opinions in relation to sports.
- Identify some of the French country names using cognates and near cognates.
- Use the correct form of aller with correct preposition to indicate where you are going.
- Write an article in French, using a writing frame, about an imaginary Olympic Games.
PSHE
Being Me in My World
- Discussing the year ahead and setting ourselves targets

Music
Gospel
Our focus this half term is Gospel music. We will develop an understanding of the influences of Gospel music and understand the indicators of a piece of music being Gospel. We will compose instrumentals and call and response melodies and learn to sing in harmony.
PE
Invasion Games (Wednesdays and Fridays)
Children will learn to develop their skills in both football and handball this half term.
Create some complex sequences of movements relating to a stimulus​
Please ensure that your child’s P.E kit is in school on these days.
