English
Reading at St Peter’s Catholic Academy
Here at St. Peter's Catholic Academy, children in Reception to Year 6 have a daily Whole Class Reading lesson. We follow the Bug Club reading scheme, allowing our children to read and enjoy high-quality books, in a range of genres and with a selection of authors.
We have a library with a calm and welcoming atmosphere. Inside, you will find a wide range of books and the children enjoy choosing a range of fiction and non-fiction texts.
Each class has timetabled reading for pleasure, where children can share books, discuss authors, make recommendations and review and discuss similar themes and genres.

English at St Peter’s Catholic Academy
At St Peter’s Catholic Academy, we want every child to become a confident reader, writer and speaker. Our English lessons follow a clear learning journey that begins by immersing pupils in rich texts, experiences and discussion. Children explore how writers use vocabulary, grammar and structure to engage their readers, before developing and practising key skills through purposeful, focused activities. They then plan, draft and refine their own writing, learning to make thoughtful choices about language and how they communicate with an audience. Throughout the process, talk and collaboration are central, helping children to develop their ideas and explain their thinking. Finally, pupils publish, perform and celebrate their work, taking pride in their achievements and developing their own authorial voice. Our approach aims to nurture children who are enthusiastic about English and confident in sharing their ideas with others.
English within school:
Nursery enjoyed World Nursery Rhyme week with their parents -

Year 5 wrote notes to each other to celebrate National Handwriting Day -

Our After School Club is lovely, a KS2 librarian reads to a KS1 pupil -

Eco – Library – Stoke Reads –
We are very excited that St. Peter’s has been chosen as the first school to receive the Eco Library from Stoke Reads. What a fantastic opportunity and we are so proud of our children. There are a variety of fiction and non-fiction books that will help in our mission to be Stewards of God’s Creation.

National Story Telling Week –
We enjoyed a special week, where lots of activities took place. Our parents were invited in each morning to read with their children. It was so lovely to see so many parents' love for reading. We had a teacher from a different class read us a story which was lots of fun and an assembly, which involved a quiz with characters and quotes –

Have a look at our posters below to help develop your breadth of reading……
